So I was talking to an old friend of mine at Original Productions, the creators of Deadliest Catch and the always fun Monster Garage. Reality shows come in all shapes and sizes, but I think it’s safe to say that Original has tapped into a real American fondness for working class heroes.
Once upon a time, reality shows were mostly game shows. That was until the dreaded 1988 writers strike led the studios to experiment with unscripted material such as Cops. Ever since, reality TV has evolved in every direction imaginable, but you can’t beat the gritty, too-close-for-comfort reality of the king crab fishing trade as presented in Deadliest Catch.
The show airs on the Discovery Channel. Season 4 just wrapped recently, but you can get the DVD’s here
