The Onion: Obama Axes Pentagon Plan To Build Billion Dollar Tank In Shape Of Dragon.
More horrifying and wasteful than Obamacare? Doubtful.

Maybe Congress’s time is in fact better spent investigating past political sex scandals, because it looks like mining the Bush White House for CIA scandals has “jumped the shark”: Fox News: Congress Authorized CIA to Develop Secret Al Qaeda Plan, Former Official Says (via SayAnything). It’s all about making Nancy Pelosi look good (or at least not look so bad).
So much for that Cheney-esque, “shadow government” hype. Next thing you know, it will be revealed that Congress authorized those scandalous AIG bonuses or something…
UPDATE: Related content from Jed Babbin: The Democrats’ War On Our Spies.
MORE: CNN: Cheney getting bum rap on CIA program (via Jim Treacher on Twitter)
ANOTHER ONE: Journalism is hard: Did the New York Times report on this secret CIA project in 2002? (H/T: @MayBeeTweet) If so, how come they now refer to it as “concealed”?
Even more to the point: how come it’s all a secret to Congress, then? Either Congress doesn’t read the NYT or Bush trusted the NYT with the information more than he did Congress, or…Pelosi and the Democrats are full of crap.
AND ANOTHER ONE: TPM: Something Not Adding Up.
Yup. There’s just not much of a there there.

Another “thrill up the leg”? About Sotomayor?
Sounds like an Irving Berlin song, but unfortunately it’s not: “I’m getting one of those thrills”.
There has to be a less intimate way of communicating admiration for someone, seriously…

Steve Rattner is to step down from Obama’s Auto Task Force. And who will take his place? A very good friend of union special interests: Ron Bloom.
Does this mean that the Corleone-style politics are only going to get worse?
UPDATE: Some theories as to Rattner’s resignation.

So hard that even big studio productions are going out of state in search of tax breaks.
More proof that the Hollywood crowd likes big, intrusive government only in the measure that it affects its bottom line.
Ask Alec Baldwin. He knows!
UPDATE: Ed Driscoll links back. Thanks!

California and Texas, the nation’s two biggest states, are the twin poles of the West, but very different ones. For most of the 20th century the home of Silicon Valley and Hollywood has been the brainier, sexier, trendier of the two: its suburbs and freeways, its fads and foibles, its marvellous miscegenation have spread around the world. Texas, once a part of the Confederacy, has trailed behind: its cliché has been a conservative Christian in cowboy boots, much like a certain recent president. But twins can change places. Is that happening now?
As a native Texan living in California, I often find myself missing Texas – even after almost 15 years – but now I miss it more than ever…

Consumer Reports: “A study released by the General Accounting Office said that bottled water undergoes less scrutiny than tap water, which must meet a tougher safety standard. The GAO study found that the regulation of bottled water (under the Food and Drug Administration’s Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act) is less strict than the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of tap water (under the Safe Drinking Water Act).”

So I’m still trying out different free mobile feeds (the key concept here is “free”). I started out using WinkSite and then switched to the Google Reader feed for mobile, but I’ve found both of them lacking in one way or another.
Today I briefly changed to FeedM8, but I just settled on a transcoded version of the blog via Mowser. I think it’s a little more straightforward (less steps to get to the content); and easier to load. It doesn’t show photos but it does link only links to videos (instead of outright omitting them). Can’t have everything, even when you don’t go free.
I think I’ll stick with Mowser for a while.

The Stimulus has proved itself inexcusable, but that should be of no concern to the administration because it turns out there’s no need for excuses: the Stimulus worked as intended!
Is this one of those Evil Emperor moments (“Witness the power of this fully operational wealth destruction scheme!”) or is economic data that hard to come by for Obama when he’s abroad?
Well, it’s not like he didn’t warn us. He did say when he signed the Stimulus that it was “the beginning of the end”. And from the look of it, he’s damn proud of it.

Perfunction: John Mellencamp’s curious interpretation of the First Amendment’s Free Speech clause.
Now those are dangerous ideas. Unfortunately for us, he is free to express them. Fortunately for us, he’s not immune from our ridicule.
I suppose he must be a big fan of the SEIU…

Spout: For a movie with no name stars or brand name franchise, District 9 is buzzing like crazy.
And it should! Sony’s ad campaign for the film has been incredibly subtle and intriguing, as intriguing as the space aliens at the center of its
plot. I keep driving past these strange ads on bus stop benches and couldn’t figure them out, except for their theme of species segregation: “For Humans Only!”, they read. I didn’t know if it was for a video game or an Adult Swim cartoon.Peter Jackson has thrown his name behind it. Looks to me like the smartest event movie of the summer. Here’s the trailer:

Twilight
is a force of nature in its own right. Ask your friendly neighborhood fanboy.
I don’t follow either franchise. Not that I don’t follow franchises. I do every now and then. But after overexposure to Hollywood product from years of marketing Hollywood product, I’m mixing it up with arthouse fare as often as I can.
Speaking of which, how about watching Buffy kick some Twilight ass right now in the video mash-up below? Enjoy (h/t: Michael Adams):

Now they got Biden defending the Stimulus. Funny. This is the same guy who’s been making excuses for it for weeks now, most recently on Sunday. But it’s all to no avail:
The current excuse…isn’t going over so well. In fact, it’s so easily disproved by rolling back the tapes of all the gloom-and-doom talk that permeated the president’s remarks in the early days of his term, that his critics are having a field day.
Indeed we are. And you can expect congressional Democrats to join the chorus as they clamor for a second stimulus and worry about 2010.

For our favorite state-run cable news networks, mediocrity is its own reward. Congratulations!
Hint: if you need fine print to brag properly, you probably shouldn’t be bragging…

Sorry about the lack of blogging today. I was running errands for much of the day. Annoying errands which depend on third parties doing their jobs and providing effective customer service in order to be accomplished.
But here are some cool links:
Drudge is linking to a photo of Presidents Obama and Sarkozy that is begging for a caption contest. I won’t reproduce it here because I’m not sure it would be Fair Use of copyrighted content.
In other news, Michael Moore has come up with a title for his documentary about the global financial crisis: Capitalism: A Love Story. Expect it to show how awful capitalism is and why everything is capitalism’s fault. I’m not posting the teaser trailer because I don’t want Michael Moore’s fat face anywhere on this site.
In economic news, Obama’s popularity seems to grow in direct proportion to the country’s economy, which is a fancy way of saying that the economy sucks. Or a fancy way of saying that Obama’s numbers are dropping. Pick whichever one makes you feel better.
Also, Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco, is trying to accomplish great things – through the use of government power, of course.
And finally, it’s not a salon, but the press was involved, it was off-the-record and it ocurred at the highest levels of government.

Anne Thompson has learned there is indeed a Clancy-related script in the pipeline at Paramount. Whatever it is, I still hope it doesn’t star George Clooney in the leading role.
Plus, a poll: What is your fave Tom Clancy movie?
I voted for Red October
. Nothing against Harrison Ford. I just think it’s the best film adaptation of the four.
