I don’t think American audiences have been historically averse to the Doctor on any substantive level. We just like big budgets and fancy production values, that’s all. And BBC shows of the 60′s and 70s – like the Doctor Who series – never had them.
But the “rebooted” Doctor Who and its spinoff Torchwood do, which I think accounts for why they are more popular in America than their BBC precursors ever were.
