LAT: “Over 26 years, disabilities or deaths caused by head or spine trauma are almost double for female high school cheerleaders than for female players of all sports combined: 73 “catastrophic injuries” — including two deaths — from fall 1982 to spring 2008. Gymnasts were second, with nine injuries.”
Cheerleading, the most dangerous sport?

The Nation: Whiner-in-Chief:
The Obama administration really needs to get over itself.
First, the president and his aides go to war with Fox News because the network maintains a generally anti-Obama slant.
Then, an anonymous administration aide attacks bloggers for failing to maintain a sufficiently pro-Obama slant.
These are not disconnected developments.
Give it a read. The Nation is not exactly a right-of-center publication, but I can empathize. You expect strength and confidence from your guy after he wins, not crybaby bitching about unsympathetic press.

[T]he award to Obama was neither more or less odd than some of the previous awards made by five Norwegian politicians no one outside of Norway had ever heard of. But his win does give us an opportunity to consider an important question, namely, why Europeans generally think so highly of Obama.

I’m on a shoot all day today. And will be for much of the week. So all the posts were scheduled in advance. I sure hope it’s not a busy news day, because I can’t react to any news until later tonight…hopefully, if I’m not too tired.
Reality-based TV is not like winning a Nobel Peace Prize, after all. It takes effort (yuk, yuk).

NYT: Comics Whack Obama: “There has been a proliferation of jokes that feed on — or are fed by — a resuscitated old narrative against the president that goes back to last year’s campaign when both John McCain and Hillary Clinton tried to portray Mr. Obama as an All Talk/No Walk showboat.”
Every president ends up the butt of jokes on late night. Not sure why this is news, but odds are the author didn’t watch SNL this past weekend.
Note the article doesn’t even refer to the above as a perception about our in fact inexperienced, over-hyped president. It’s a resuscitated old narrative against him – i.e., an insidious, mean-spirited tale that should have died long ago.

Watch out, everybody! The White House is “taking the gloves off” in its never-ending battle with…a cable news network?
The administration’s champion in this epic fight is White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, who unimaginatively communicated the conclusion below on this weekend’s broadcast of Reliable Sources:
“What I think is fair to say about Fox…is that it really is more of a wing of the Republican party…let’s not pretend they’re a news network the way CNN is…I’m talking about the overall programming.”
I suppose she says the above intending to discredit Fox, what with the decline of the GOP and all (a decline Obama is working hard to reverse); but mostly out of frustration with the Constitution’s Free Speech Clause, and the fact that Fox News is the most watched cable news network in America (even at 3AM, when Fox isn’t airing any news whatsoever, but their competition is).
That aside, what I think is safe to say about Dunn is that she is really more of an enabler of ACORN, and thus shouldn’t even be working in the White House or relied on by the American People to communicate anything. Why? Because the SEIU – which we could say is one and the same with ACORN – is a client of Squier Knapp Dunn Communications’, the PR firm Dunn co-owns:

And then there’s the question of what is Squier’s and – by extension – Dunn’s connection to Rod Blagojevich? But that’s for another post.
Dunn is right about one thing (even a broken clock…): Fox News is nothing like CNN. But that’s a feature, not a bug.

Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize seems to be confusing a lot of people. It is confusing. It makes you shake your head and ask a big “Why?”. And I think one could feel that way regardless of one’s political inclinations. But others are confused at why some of us are confused. It’s complicated.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Merit had nothing to do with it. Obama didn’t do anything for international relations between the day of his inauguration and the deadline for Peace Prize nomination submissions (which amounts to 12 days). Further, Obama admitted in public that he didn’t deserve the award. And I gotta hand it to POTUS for doing so.
But those of us who find the award outrageous are not hating Obama for getting it; and it’s not hyperbole to say it’s awful that he’s gotten it. Fraudster Rigoberta Menchu, terrorist Yasser Arafat, and History’s Greatest Monster are all recent Peace Prize recipients (and yet, Bill Clinton – who’s been working for years with Bill Gates to fight AIDS, is not).
The Committee’s standards evidently are in the toilet. That should be even more apparent since 2007, when the world’s most alarming science-fiction movie star, Albert Gore Jr., was honored with their award. But this time the Committee has outdone itself. It has given the Prize to an American president to honor him for accomplishing nothing of substance. That makes a mockery of the award and it indeed makes a joke of Obama.
Come to think of it, it might even be raaaaacist (much like that A- from Time magazine). The Committee might have been wrongly convinced – in their racial prejudice – that Obama would never accomplish anything worthy of an international award, so they just went ahead and gave him one to make him feel better about himself.
In fact, it’s wrong to think that conservatives are angry for Obama getting the award. Yes, we laughed at his Olympic Fail, but we’re also laughing at the Nobel Win. Why? I can only speak for myself, but in two words: Accelerated Carterization.
UPDATE: Does Obama supporter Peggy Noonan read The Rhetorican? I doubt it, but we seem to be in agreement on at least one important point: “In one mindless stroke, the committee has rendered the Nobel Peace Prize a laughingstock”.

So I got me a job story-producing an episode of a reality show to air on NatGeo.
Well, it’s reality-based, but not your traditional follow-a-celeb or bunch-of-strangers-in-a-house kind of show. It’s National Geographic, after all. Should be fun and interesting; with cool scientific tidbits and lots of hard working men and women making amazing stuff happen on screen.
Anyway, as a result, less blogging than usual will be accomplished in the next four weeks. Next week The days ahead may be especially blog-less for me, as we start shooting on Monday and won’t wrap till Saturday tomorrow. I’ll see if I get Dr. Fiancee to guest-blog, but she’s got stuff of her own to do.

STRATFOR: Two Leaks and the Deepening Iran Crisis:
The message was twofold. First, previous assumptions on time frames on Iran are no longer valid, and worst-case assumptions must now be assumed. The Iranians are in fact moving rapidly toward a weapon; have been extremely effective at deceiving U.S. intelligence…; and therefore, we are moving toward a decisive moment with Iran.

This is worse than Bush 41 not knowing the price of a carton of milk. POTUS needs to go on world tour less and stick around the home turf a little more. That is, if he wants to appear like he knows what he’s doing.

Makes you wonder how it is that the Left hasn’t imploded worldwide yet. Much of it is rife with such a weak grasp on reality.
