In Virginia and New Jersey, they don’t want any. And as Obama’s fortunes drop, the GOP could be looking at a brighter future…if it plays its cards Right…and stops Scozzafaving around.
Which takes us to the sore topic of NY23. Alas, NY23 – a GOP stronghold – went Dem; and that’s probably the GOP’s fault. GOP-backed DIABLO Dede Scozzafava didn’t just endorse Democrat Owens, but remained on the ballot and drew thousands of votes from Conservative Hoffman.
But let’s not fool ourselves. NY23 would have virtually gone Dem even if it had stayed Republican. Owens’ victory was a Republican defeat, but not a substantive blow to the Right. That’s because it was a side-effect of the Tea Party movement successfully flexing its muscle.
So the news ain’t all bad. Even if this is the end of the line for Hoffman’s political career – which may not be the case at all – it’s definitely the beginning of the GOP’s Tea-fueled attitude adjustment.
The night was a mixed bag even for Obama: the president can take comfort in knowing that in the state of Maine, people actually see things his way (yuk, yuk).
