How Did Hasan Fall Through the Cracks? November 5, 2009

I learned about the Fort Hood shooting during work, so I couldn’t quite write about it until now.

12 people are dead and many lives have been shattered.  It is a tragedy; but as sad as it is, it is also becoming infuriating as more facts about the whole matter emerge.

The shooter – Malik Hasan – is an officer in the US Army – and a psychiatrist.  But he is also a Muslim man who months ago drew the attention of law enforcement officers for what was clearly expressions of sympathy for suicide bombers.  Another account – by a colleague on a Fox News interview – has him making troubling pronouncements along the same lines.  He was also – according to NPR – put in probation for proselytizing for Islam.

The man was a time bomb.  Was it political correctness that kept him on the job and around the people he ultimately hurt?  It’s hard to stop thinking that – perhaps unlike the Little Rock incident from this summer – today’s tragedy could have been prevented.  Or maybe not.

Speaking of the Little Rock shooting, The Ditherer-in-Chief gave it short shrift when it happened.  His reaction today was not exactly an improvement
