Prof. Jacobson sees Obamacare going nowhere.
You’d expect Obama, Reid and Pelosi would know everything Professor Jacobson discusses at the link. I keep thinking they felt they might as well go for it while they can and try to end a bad week for the Democratic party on a high note. Although it’s a high note only if you look at things superficially.
Still, none of the above means it’s time to relax. As long as Obama is in power and Dems control Washington, we need to keep fighting to replace the curren political class.
UPDATE: Ed Morrisey also sees a tough going for the legislation in the Senate.

Obama tells Dems that GOP will attack regardless of their vote on health care.
It’s not GOP attacks Dems should worry about. It’s how people vote in 2010 that should have them concerned. Two very different things.

NYT spins Ft. Hood massacre: it wasn’t Islamic radicalism. It was probably all that stress…
UPDATE: Related: American Power: Hasan’s link to 9/11.
MORE: The ethnic harassment canard. My understanding is that – being an officer in the U.S. Army – Hasan could have acted on any instance of ethnic harassment on the spot. No reporting or filing a complaint necessary. He could have had people penalized for such conduct just like that.
If you are in the service and care to e-mail, I welcome any clarification of the above policy.

NBC News: Obama’s frightening insensitivity following Ft. Hood massacre.
After the Little Rock murder, he seemed equally detached.
I suppose that if you feel like you must apologize to the world for America, Muslim attacks against Americans can’t possibly be an outrage to you. After all, thinking “they had it coming” flows naturally from such attitude.
A similar lack of outrage killed Dukakis’ presidential bid during a debate over 20 years ago. The GOP would be well advised to remember this for 2012. The campaign commercial basically writes and produces itself.

Sounds like dialogue from a B mobster movie scene in which the weak flunky doesn’t have what it takes to whack the victim.
Well, not quite, but close: it’s just POTUS telling Pelosi to pass Obamacare in the House. And now the House is debating the measure.
UPDATE: VIDEO: Some debate: Dems just shut it down!
MORE: Delay?
ANOTHER ONE: The House passes the bill. Lame. But chances of the same happening in the Senate are slim. But that shouldn’t surprise anyone. No matter how you spin it.

I learned about the Fort Hood shooting during work, so I couldn’t quite write about it until now.
12 people are dead and many lives have been shattered. It is a tragedy; but as sad as it is, it is also becoming infuriating as more facts about the whole matter emerge.
The shooter – Malik Hasan – is an officer in the US Army – and a psychiatrist. But he is also a Muslim man who months ago drew the attention of law enforcement officers for what was clearly expressions of sympathy for suicide bombers. Another account – by a colleague on a Fox News interview – has him making troubling pronouncements along the same lines. He was also – according to NPR – put in probation for proselytizing for Islam.
The man was a time bomb. Was it political correctness that kept him on the job and around the people he ultimately hurt? It’s hard to stop thinking that – perhaps unlike the Little Rock incident from this summer – today’s tragedy could have been prevented. Or maybe not.
Speaking of the Little Rock shooting, The Ditherer-in-Chief gave it short shrift when it happened. His reaction today was not exactly an improvement…

And very insecure, too: BigHollywood: Left lashes out at V remake as an attack against Obama.
It’s only a TV show, guys. And a remake of a pretty darn good mini-series from 25+ years ago which was itself inspired by even older works. I doubt very much Glenn Beck is a secret VP of Programming at ABC, either. I know you just lost two governorships, but please. You’re making a scene.
However, this little video below has been circulating for months now, so maybe it’s worse than you imagine and “Obama as Oppressor” is simply a meta-meme that is driving the current zeitgeist (H/T: Wesley M.):
Incidentally, I doubt the showrunner was sacked because of his politics, too….

So I was able to catch Van Halen’s video for (Oh) Pretty Woman last night, for the first time ever (on VH1-Classic).
I liked it! Almost two minutes of pure cinema, plus a few seconds of the Samurai and Western genres. Not to mention the Godzilla-style opening logo. They were post-modern before post-modern was cool!

In Virginia and New Jersey, they don’t want any. And as Obama’s fortunes drop, the GOP could be looking at a brighter future…if it plays its cards Right…and stops Scozzafaving around.
Which takes us to the sore topic of NY23. Alas, NY23 – a GOP stronghold – went Dem; and that’s probably the GOP’s fault. GOP-backed DIABLO Dede Scozzafava didn’t just endorse Democrat Owens, but remained on the ballot and drew thousands of votes from Conservative Hoffman.
But let’s not fool ourselves. NY23 would have virtually gone Dem even if it had stayed Republican. Owens’ victory was a Republican defeat, but not a substantive blow to the Right. That’s because it was a side-effect of the Tea Party movement successfully flexing its muscle.
So the news ain’t all bad. Even if this is the end of the line for Hoffman’s political career – which may not be the case at all – it’s definitely the beginning of the GOP’s Tea-fueled attitude adjustment.
The night was a mixed bag even for Obama: the president can take comfort in knowing that in the state of Maine, people actually see things his way (yuk, yuk).

I keep making inroads into reality TV production, as I just lined up another producer gig on an episode of the second season of a certain Discovery series. Maybe you’ve seen it. Maybe you haven’t.
It’s a 7-week job, so it should keep me busy through the end of the year. This means my blogging will remain limited for the foreseeable future. My plan is to keep scheduling posts early in the morning or in the evening; and to blog live in whatever measure is possible.
So if you read The Rhetorican with any frequency, you’ll have to excuse the lack of real-time blogging. I just can’t keep up with current events the way I used to.
