Springtime for Obama
Spring has begun; but there is little in the air of the sense of renewal that comes with the season. Instead, we got a display of the worst of American politics. Something the likes of which I have not seen in my lifetime: House Democrats gave most Americans the finger and voted for a bill most Americans don’t want. It wasn’t to heal the sick. It wasn’t for our welfare. It wasn’t to limit abortions. It was only politics. Representative democracy be damned.
Like Springtime for Hitler – the fictional music in Mel Brooks’ brilliant The Producers – Obamacare is a sham largely conceived to steal: freedom, money, and more will be taken from us in the name of Universal Healthcare, a utopian myth if there was ever one. Another parallel: while there’s nothing funny about Obamacare, the House’s conduct tonight certainly evokes fascism.
Next stop, the U.S. Senate, where the bill must go through a vote once more. But this is far from over. Even if Obama signs the bill into law tomorrow, it’ll be only the end of the beginning.
