I have finally moved apartments, but I also got a job this week. So I think blogging will be rare for a couple of weeks.
I still have a lot of boxes to unpack and stuff to organize, for one. Plus a wedding to plan!

Yes, that’s the New York Times saying it. I’m sure they and the White House are struggling to concoct a plausible explanation that puts all the blame on the GOP, Bush, or The Daily Caller or maybe even Rush Limbaugh. Good luck.

I sometimes hear references to the concept of “social justice” when I’m in Mass. Not very often, fortunately. It’s quite off-putting…
I know, it’s a man-bites-dog story. If Stone’s Hollywood peers were to criticize him for his anti-semitic statements, now that would be news.
If they came to his defense, that would be news, too. But that probably won’t happen until he rapes a child.
Welcome to Bell, California: “Bell is one of Los Angeles County’s poorest towns. Ten days ago, its residents woke up to learn that its City Council was paying its city manager, Robert Rizzo, nearly $800,000 a year, its police chief $457,000 and its assistant city manager $376,000.”
If you live in SoCal, odds are you are already familiar with Bell’s disgustingly greedy City Hall denizens. So very telling of the state of our politics today. But this is a story with which all Americans should become familiar, because there is a warning in it for all of us.
The truth is the citizens of Bell are not entirely blameless here. They ended up being governed and bled for money – in large part – because they allowed it to happen through their lack of civic involvement (word is a great deal of them don’t even speak English, which would explain a lot; but I can’t attest to that).
And that’s the bottom line here: the Ruling Class will get away taking its “subjects” for all they’re worth – at the local, state, and federal levels – as long as the citizenry fails to flex the considerable amount of control which our nation’s laws still grant it. It’s like any muscle in a healthy body. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. If you never exercise it, you can be sure it will atrophy. Use it or lose it.

NYT yesterday: Mystery for the White House: Where did the jobs go?
Inspector General today: You mean the jobs they’ve been destroying?
I’d be delighted to be confronted with a mystery one day and find that mystery partly solved the next. It’ll be interesting to see how the NYT reacts to this new development.
If they really are interested in the high level of joblessness, they’ll report on it. If the NYT just wanted to let us know how much the White House “cares” and how hard they’re “working” to bring the jobs back, they’ll ignore it.

Think Progress has produced and published a new video, a little work of deception-through-editing in which they misrepresent a handful of people as racist members of the Tea Party movement.
We’ve heard this song before from the Left. It didn’t prove a catchy tune last year. This year is no different. Except that the midterms are around the corner and Democrats everywhere are grinding their teeth. So now they’re desperate. And they’re pushing the limits because, you know, you generally can’t defame a group. So let’s keep calling them racists. We have nothing to lose.
Well, Think Progress isn’t thinking, period (which is sad and funny at one time because they’re part of a liberal think tank). Unfortunately for them, their Legal Department is not on the ball either. You generally can’t defame a group; and you generally can’t defame an individual with video of that individual saying something nasty. But you can still cause a legal harm to an individual with the sort of deceptive editing contained in Think Progress’s video, through the tort of False Light (scroll all the way down).
Unlike the common law tort of Defamation, False Light does not protect reputation, but mental well-being (and we’re not talking about public figures here, so Hustler v. Falwell doesn’t come into play).
In D.C. – where Think Progress‘s parent organization is headquartered – and in many other jurisdictions where the video is no doubt viewable, the law recognizes the tort of False Light: “Plaintiffs can sue for false light when a false and offensive statement is made about them to the public and causes them distress.” One could argue that at least two individuals depicted on the Think Progress video may have False Light claims, especially the man who was quoted out of context who also happens to be married to an African American woman and is the father of a mixed-race child.
But why stop at one claim? Fans of the defamation tort are in luck, because the District of Columbia Circuit has held that “[p]ublicity that is actionable in a false light claim generally will be actionable in defamation as well.”
Think Progress – for a think tank blog – has acted in an incredibly amateurish fashion in producing this demonstrably false video. And it is very likely that they have harmed – at the least – the reputations of private individuals. That they have harmed their own institutional reputation is a foregone conclusion.

Should be fun to watch how this develops…and how it’s covered by the media. I still haven’t seen Mediaite‘s Glynnis MacNicol correct her atrocious coverage of a similar dispute involving Glenn Beck, for example.
That was way off the mark, as I describe at the link. In fact, MacNicol’s reportage on the Beck matter was anything but. It was a complete fabrication. Calling it a product of her imagination would not be hyperbole.
“We aren’t saying that the tea party is racist,” Jealous said. “What we’re saying is that with their increasing power comes an increasing responsibility to act responsibly”.
Sounds a little redundant redundant. And an awful lot like the “I misspoke” excuse that is thrown around so often these days when people stick their foot in their mouth. An empty excuse that – ironically – accepts no responsibility and offers no apology.
But the message is clear: the NAACP can’t prove the Tea Party is a racist movement and instead has managed to alienate a good part of the African American community, the sizable group which found a political home in the Tea Party movement. So it’s time for damage control.
If only they’d consulted with Breitbart first, they could have spared themselves this embarrassment.
