I discuss ‘The Artist’ and the Beauty of Pure Cinema at PJ Lifestyle. It’s a French movie you don’t want to miss, with John Goodman, James Cromwell, and Penelope Ann Miller as supporting cast. But the real treat are the French leads, Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.

The Death of Movies: Weekend Box Office drops to 2008 levels. Well, it hasn’t exactly been a great year in terms of Hollywood offerings.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy did pretty good, though (but it’s not exactly Hollywood studio product). We saw it last night. It’s very cerebral and the pacing is quite deliberate, but I never found it boring even though I was already familiar with the story. Fans of the Le Carré novel – such as my wife – may not find it as satisfying as the 1979 BBC miniseries, which stars Alec Guiness and was also pretty damn entertaining. The cast of the movie – led by Gary Oldman – was excellent, however. The art direction, too.

Hollywood’s Favorite Villain: Business. But note new indie release Margin Call: “Unlike most films that view business through the lens of Hollywood, such as 2000′s ‘Boiler Room’and 1987′s ‘Wall Street,’there are no perp-walk scenes or moralistic finger-wags. When offered financing from producers who wanted these elements introduced, the filmmakers turned them down.”
Nice.

Recovery Bummer, Hollywood Edition: Sony to Stop Paying for 3D Glasses in May 2012: “Sony Pictures Entertainment has notified theater owners in a letter that it will no longer pay for 3D glasses, beginning in May 2012, marking a major policy shift that many other studios are likely considering…The price tag for 3D glasses is no laughing matter — studios can spend $5 million to $10 million worldwide for a tentpole (they pay after the fact, based on how many glasses were actually used).”
This can only mean one of two things: either going to the movies is about to become more expensive, or 3D movies as a viable entertainment business are heading for extinction…all over again.

Hollywood Tries A New Battle Plan: “After years of war movies about conflicted fighters, a new crop of films is shifting focus: to tactics, technology and teamwork.”

Incidentally, Dr. Wife and I really liked Salt, which is steeped in Cold War themes. Much better movie than I anticipated (although the main character’s physical prowess stretched credulity a couple of times). I never would have considered it if it wasn’t for reading about it on Libertas.

THR: Splashy Sarah Palin Movie Shuts Out Hollywood.
And who can blame it? It wasn’t just Hollywood that got shut out, though: “Reporters from around the country that have descended upon tiny Pella, Iowa for the premiere of the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated on Tuesday night were in for a rude awakening: So scarce are the tickets that there’s no room in the theater for journalists.”
Odds are most of them didn’t really want to be there, anyway.

Has Hollywood Stopped Trying?
CHUD compares Mr. Popper’s Penguins (June 17) to The Smurfs (July 29), both of which we included in our list of the Summer’s Nine Worst Movie Trailers… Not only does each one look bad on its own, but shot for shot they “appear to be the exact same movie.”
You mean they were trying before this?

Awesome gallery here.

This is a Brooklyn I’ve only seen on film. I rarely visited Brooklyn while I lived in New York back during my college years, but all those movie memories actually make these photos feel strangely familiar. The shot of the Brooklyn bridge in between two rows of buildings has been used in at least one movie that I can recall: Once Upon A Time In America (if not on its poster and promotional materials).
