Incidentally, Dr. Wife and I really liked Salt, which is steeped in Cold War themes. Much better movie than I anticipated (although the main character’s physical prowess stretched credulity a couple of times). I never would have considered it if it wasn’t for reading about it on Libertas.

BBC”s Mark Kermode finds a way to express his feelings about Transformers 3.
I suppose he was unable to make his point with a series of face-palms.
Why does this all remind me of the Obama administration?

Awesome gallery here.

This is a Brooklyn I’ve only seen on film. I rarely visited Brooklyn while I lived in New York back during my college years, but all those movie memories actually make these photos feel strangely familiar. The shot of the Brooklyn bridge in between two rows of buildings has been used in at least one movie that I can recall: Once Upon A Time In America (if not on its poster and promotional materials).

Arnold is very much in the news today, at least in the world of entertainment news.
But here’s another side of Arnold that you didn’t know about…or 30 sides, to be precise:

LAT: “The Library of Congress is flipping a switch Tuesday that will open a large chunk of the national archive of more than 3 million music and spoken-word recordings for public online streaming as part of a new National Jukebox project, a joint venture between the library and Sony Music that will give free access to thousands of Sony-controlled recordings long out of circulation because of commercial or copyright issues.”
Cool.

For crying out loud. You’d figure New Jersey would have more urgent matters on which to focus. Or a more sensible approach to their concerns.

…at FilmLadd‘s, where he also points out the same worries about tyranny that I suppose anyone who’s paying attention must have when watching the show.
Like Ladd, I was also late to the Firefly
party until my wife introduced me to the series some years ago while we were dating. I was unaware of its libertarian subtext. Otherwise, I would have probably watched sooner. I’ve never quite been sold on its blending of the Western and Sci-fi genres, though.
Still, I have a lot of respect and admiration for Whedon, especially because of Buffy
and his writing talent in general. I read his screenplay for Alien Resurrection
back in the 90′s before the movie went into production, thanks to a friend who was working as a script reader at the time. The script was nothing like the movie. I mean, it was great. I read it in 60 minutes because I couldn’t put it down. Needless to say, I was sorely disappointed at the film (and I wasn’t the only one) which was directed by another filmmaker I also admire, Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
Whedon is currently in pre-production for the Marvel Avengers movie on the same studio lot in New Mexico where I happen to work. My admiration for him is such that I find it very hard not to stalk him, especially given that his parking space is only a few steps away from my desk…

Journalism is hard: “Tim Rutten’s Feb. 2 Op-Ed column about Simon & Schuster’s promotion of the political novel ‘O’cited two passages it said were from the book, saying they demonstrated the author’s partisanship. Neither passage actually appeared in the book.”
To be fair, an opinion piece is not the same as reporting, but come on. Aren’t editors supposed to be minding the store here? Or has evil anti-Obama partisanship been living rent-free in their minds for so long that no one bothered to question the accuracy of Rutten’s accusations?

..broken down by someone who knows a thing or two about producing political ads.
I remember reading a long time ago that no one sets out to make a bad movie. I think that’s true – and the same goes for any audiovisual work. It takes so much effort, first of all, that no one would embark on such an enterprise if they weren’t expecting to create something good. Alas, the best of intentions rarely results in excellence.
To paraphrase Clint Eastwood’s Harry Callahan in Magnum Force, a filmmaker’s got to know his limitations…
